18 White, 6 Blue
Kevin English is the Executive Director of DaVinci’s Lab, a newly formed non-profit with the mission of providing unique math and science opportunities for students in Central Oregon through public-private partnerships. Kevin is an expert in Massively Open On-Line Courses (MOOC’s) like the Stanford AI Project where over 26,000 students world wide completed a college level on-line course together. Kevin and his work with DaVinci’s Lab is leading the national conversation in how to use MOOC’s within high schools to provide supplementary curriculum that is not normally available to students and how to re-invent the classroom based on a “new” model of on-line learning. Kevin is a former submarine officer, an electrical engineer, and an educator.
If we ask people to consume a dose of antibiotics this is 18 white pills followed by 6 blue pills, the probability that they complete the entire dose, compared to just 24 white pills, increases markedly.
Is there a lesson in this for us educators? I believe so.
In this talk, I'll will explore four ideas regarding learning and motivation that are “outside the box” of traditional educational thinking. These ideas are the synthesis of an eclectic mix of “experts” including a seasoned TED speaker, an actor, a worldwide leader in advertising and digital media, and a professor of psychology at one of our nation's leading universities.
