If you had 5 minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds?
Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to enlighten us – quickly.
Addicted to Judgment
I am a practicing counselor and the Program Director at College Excel in Bend. I am also an avid woodworker, musician, aikido practitioner, and writer. I worked in wilderness therapy with troubled adolescents for 8 years before joining College Excel. I have lived in Bend for ten years.
I wrote an article that was published in Counseling Today, a national publication from the American Counseling Association. Here is a link to that:
In my talk, I would like to discuss the history and current application of our wonderful and cursed ability, judgment. I define judgment as the process by which we arrive at a definitive conclusion about something, and the conclusion itself.
Judgment enabled us to evolve, and make safety and survival decisions, such as what food was safe to eat, and which humans were trustworthy. The problem now is that we use judgment as a blunt instrument to almost any situation, and we do so at our own peril. The current political gridlock is the best example of this. Our judgment worked so well at keeping us safe, that now we use it all the time. We judge so much, but far from helping us survive now, our judgments have merely become the insulation that allows us to manage our anxiety. When judgment enters into relationships, it is often the harbinger of death for that relationship. Using our judgment in this way is akin to using a hammer for painting; it is simply the wrong tool for the job, and will create an undesirable effect when used in this manner.
