Hearts of Darkness: A completely true tale of the mayhem, mischief and mania of childhood

After a whiplash move from Lake Tahoe to La Pine at a very young and impressionable age, I went native fairly quickly. Baptized into the Central Oregon ethic with a swan dive into the Little Deschutes (just upstream from a cow carcass), I have lived the epitome of a CO life. Landscaping in Sunriver, playing violin in the Central Oregon Symphony, throwing pie at Ponderosa Pizza, taking Writing 121 in high school at COCC while pretending to be at least three years older than I was when anybody asked, ditching school on glorious powder days, running back to Bend as soon as graduate school was over with a Californian wife in tow, climbing out at Smith Rock whenever I think nobody will miss me at the house and now part of the young team at one of Bend's beloved internet start-up. So, yes, a very typical Central Oregon biography.

There is a reason that every year, variations of the Exorcist are pitched by writers, approved by production companies, cast with A-list actors and released to a general public that consumes these mostly awful films in such droves that they keep getting made. All of us, at one point, have encountered a child who could seemingly put Satan out of work. Kids who make you wish the Nalgene bottle was filled with holy water. Tots who inspire you to carry garlic, crucifixes and learn latin incantations. One hot Summer day, me, my brother and our two best friends were those children. Perhaps it was the idleness of the Summer, the heat inducing a fugue demon state. Or maybe it was one last act of insanely diabolical behaviour to show our parents we did not want to move away as promised at Summer's end. Whatever the dark, dark power was that took control of us that day, it has given me a story for life, and the feeling that the child in the cereal aisle is capable of anything.
