About Ignite

If you had 5 minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to enlighten us – quickly.

Learn 'em Good

Garrett Gladden

Recently a teacher, instructional coach and designer, currently a G5'er specializing in web project management

After a whiplash move from Lake Tahoe to La Pine at a very young and impressionable age, I went native fairly quickly. Baptized into the Central Oregon ethic with a swan dive into the Little Deschutes (just upstream from a cow carcass), I have lived epitome of a CO life. Landscaping in Sunriver, playing violin in the Central Oregon Symphony, throwing pie at Ponderosa Pizza, taking Writing 121 in high school at COCC while pretending to be at least three years older than I was when anybody asked, ditching school on glorious powder days, running back to Bend as soon as graduate school was over with a Californian wife in tow, taught for four years at Sisters High School, climbing out at Smith Rock whenever I think nobody will miss me at the house and now part of the young team at Bend's most beloved internet startup. So, yes, a very typical Central Oregon biography.

The common refrain is that American education is lagging behind. Politicians, reformers, anti-reformers, teachers unions and school boards are often reminding the good citizens of this "fact". This conclusion is arrived at through a presumptuous metric that at the end of the day should leave us asking: Should we measure the health of our children's education with this score? I say no. And so should you. The world of education needs to be remade, and some incredible examples of how we should remake that world can be seen here in Central Oregon. From building guitars with Breedlove at Sisters High School to the rock climbing club at Summit, our local way of teaching students to seek solutions to problems could go viral. All you need to do is stop listening to the politicians, unions and school boards, and start educating them!
