About Ignite

If you had 5 minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to enlighten us – quickly.

The changing face of education

Jonathon Bullock

Jon is currently the Executive Director for the Redmond Proficiency Academy, a school that he founded. He has been involved on countless layers of youth & youth leadership development, stating, "I believe that young people are one of our greatest, untapped natural resources. Young people, and in particular student leaders, are filled with passion and energy. It is our job as adults to provide them with platforms upon which they can reach their potential and to build the scaffolding that supports their climb."

Jon caught the bug for mentoring while coaching high school athletics and advising student organizations in Corvallis, OR, eventually serving as Chair of the Kids Helping Kids division of Children’s Miracle Network in Eugene, OR. More recently, he has volunteered with Sparrow Clubs, serving on the Board of Directors, as a speaker at public events, and even as a dancer in their inaugural Swinging For The Stars fundraiser. He is a counselor and motivational speaker for the Oregon Association of Student Councils and spent time on the Executive Council of the National Association of Student Councils.

Then beyond youth empowerment, school administration and philanthropy, Jon has taught administrative and teacher preparation courses for Lewis & Clark College and Concordia University.

In his spare time, Jon enjoys coaching competitive youth soccer for the Bend FC Timbers and spending time with his teenage daughter, Katie.

With all of the talk about poor graduation rates and other issues facing education, people may tend to think that our education system is struggling - or even worse, broken. While I won't propose that the education system is perfect, I will show how our current education system is better than we might think. This presentation will use humor to make a poignant statement about what our education is and what it can be - particularly if we are willing to shift our mindset a little bit.
