About Ignite

If you had 5 minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to enlighten us – quickly.

The Rhythm of Life

Kent Godfrey

My extraordinary and varied life has prepared me to speak at Ignite Bend. For example, my BA in theatre and subsequent performance experience has taught me how to structure and present a story. Training in clowning enables me use comedy to grab an audience’s attention and keep them engaged. Additionally, as a teacher, I have mastered the art of constructing an informative and easily-understood lesson. Throughout my life I’ve worked with disabled people at camps, group homes, and in schools. Eventually, I attained an MA in special education where I became an advocate for access for all people.

These experiences have also led to my calling in life: working with disabled people within the arts. As a result, I have described plays to blind patrons, performed in a deaf theatre company, and developed multi-sensory theatre for the blind. As a Peace Corps volunteer on the island of St. Lucia, I used my classroom as a laboratory where I developed new teaching methods and theories related to multisensory music. Ever since, I have been expanding on that work such as when I earned a master’s degree in special education and a professional diploma in dance studies. Additionally, I pursued a PhD in interdisciplinary studies where I demonstrated that the concept “music” is a construct of the Western imagination and that things (including the components of music) can be experienced through multiple senses.

The concept “music” is generally composed of rhythm, melody, tone, and harmony. For my Ignite Bend talk, I will focus on rhythm and how, for millennia, the species of mankind has been bombarded in nature with rhythm through various senses.

Things such as the stripes on a zebra, a bird’s feathers, and speckles on a fish create rhythm. Rhythm is in the movement of flocks of birds and the call of elk. The design of plants including an entire forest, the rings of a tree, and the patterns on a leaf all constitute rhythm. Rhythm exists in water including the structure of snowflakes, the flow of rivers, and the patter of raindrops. Additionally, rhythm occurs within the human body. It exists in things such as the repetition of digits, the design of muscles, and the reoccurring patterns found in DNA. Rhythm also exists in bodily processes including locomotion, breathing, and the heartbeat. Thus, rhythm experienced in the world all around us and within us.

There are two consequences of rhythm existing throughout nature in various senses. The first consequence is that by being bombarded with rhythm for hundreds of thousands of years, the species of mankind knows it intimately, values it greatly, and uses it (along with melody, tone, and harmony) to form the concept “music.” The second result is that all individual humans have the capacity to express and perceive rhythm (one of the ingredients of music) through various senses. This provides one area of support for deaf people to learn, create, and perform the components of music using senses in addition to sound.
