Biography
J.G. Boccella is a recording artist, educator and speaker with over ten years of experience at the nexus of arts, education, and advocacy. Founder of Modo Mio Music, he has created a series of programs that use music and the arts as catalysts for dialogue on race in America. Boccella holds an A.B. in Visual Art from Brown University and an Ed.M. in Arts in Education from Harvard University. Currently, J.G. is completing his book: "The Conversation We COULD Be Having: Thoughts on a New Paradigm for Race" in which he describes how a simple shift in America's approach to race relations could have profound consequences.

Description
This talk begins with the premise that there is a conversation about race relations that is not happening in America. Despite many efforts, when it comes to having a frank and productive dialogue about race, something still seems to be missing. Too often, there is a disconnect, leaving many people of color feeling like their concerns are being dismissed or minimized, and leaving many white people feeling hesitant to speak freely – concerned about saying the wrong thing or being perceived as insensitive, clueless, or prejudiced. And so, the conversation we could be having gets shut down before it even gets started. How do we have an authentic national conversation about race that engages each person’s whole humanity? How do we build a container that can hold a generative dialogue, rather than one that so easily unravels into frustration, resentment and misunderstanding? J.G. Boccella discusses ways to bridge the “disconnect” that exists between white people and people of color, how we can go from an “either/or” to a “both/and” approach to race, and what it means to be an “ally.”
