About Ignite

If you had 5 minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to enlighten us – quickly.

Ultimate Frisbee and World Peace

Andy Wade

I'm 27 and moved to Bend in September. Grew up in Louisiana and Texas, went to school in Chicago, and most recently lived in Flagstaff, Arizona. I work for the Bend Bulletin as a copy editor/page designer. I've been playing Ultimate Frisbee for 10 years now, both for serious competition and just as a fun recreation.

Ultimate Frisbee -- yes, that grand old Game Of Hippies -- is becoming a serious sport. Not only are the numbers of players growing, but leagues and tournaments are becoming more and more competitive and prestigious. But what I want to talk about is how competitors interact with each other on the field, and how we can all learn from compromise. In Ultimate, there are no referees. Players make foul calls, and those who committed the foul get to respond, either admitting the foul or contesting it. Play moves on. Oh, another important point: All players are more or less required to buy into a Spirit of the Game clause, essentially the sport's "Golden Rule." What it comes down to, in Ultimate, is a form of quick compromise. I say you fouled me; you say you didn't. We discuss, hopefully civilly, what happened, and we come to a conclusion about what the outcome should be. It's not always pretty, but it works. Respect is almost always shown despite fierce competition. What's most important about the dispute is that players actually listen to one another. It's not simply "This is what I think, that's the end." It's a great lesson in compromise and in simply getting along. This form of compromise can apply to events in everyday life, and potentially even bigger arenas, such as world diplomacy.
